Tallinn: the small airport a tram ride from the old town
Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport (IATA TLL, ICAO EETN) lies on the shore of Lake Ülemiste, just four kilometers from the center of Tallinn, Estonia's capital. It is the country's only major airport and one of the most pleasant small airports in Europe, with a terminal that feels more like a living room than a hall and a tram that puts the medieval old town twenty minutes away. For visitors it is the gateway to Estonia and, with the ferries to Helsinki two hours across the gulf, part of a classic Baltic itinerary. Airlines and destinations
airBaltic is the largest airline in Tallinn, flying to Riga, Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, Amsterdam, Munich, Berlin, Brussels, Paris and London; Finnair shuttles to Helsinki many times a day, SAS to Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo, Lufthansa to Frankfurt and Munich, LOT to Warsaw and SWISS to Zurich. Ryanair and Wizz Air provide the low-cost links to London, Milan, Berlin, Barcelona and Eastern Europe, and Pegasus and SunExpress fly to Turkey in summer. Getting into Tallinn
Tram line 4 stops right outside the terminal and reaches the Viru Keskus stop at the edge of the old town in about twenty minutes, every ten minutes, with a ticket bought by contactless card on board; bus 2 covers the same ground. Taxis and Bolt rides take ten to fifteen minutes to the center and are cheap by Nordic standards. The airport is on the main road into the city, so rental cars are easy to pick up and drop off; the ferry port for Helsinki is a fifteen-minute drive.
Good to know
Tallinn has one terminal with a single security checkpoint and the gates a few minutes' walk away, so an hour before departure is plenty on most days. The Schengen and non-Schengen gates share the same hall; British and Turkish flights pass passport control. Estonia uses the euro and is almost entirely cashless. In winter, snow and fog occasionally delay the Helsinki shuttles, but the airport keeps running in conditions that would close others.
