Metro Field: A Gateway to the Wonders of Alaska
Introduction
As the name suggests, Metro Field (IATA: MTX) is at present a small airport located in Alaska. Since July 1967, this airport has been bringing travelers to the Last Frontier and all of its breathtaking natural splendor and cultural tapestry for over fifty years. Whether you are headed deep into the wilds of Alaska for an adventure or just passing through, Metro Field gets you to your unforgettable experiences.
Airlines and Destinations
Metro Field is a small regional airport that caters to general aviation and private charter flights. The other side of this spectrum is that it is being used economically in the United States by regional airlines but only to a limited extent. The airport now has a couple of airlines, mainly Alaskan carriers in line with other airports such as Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) or Anchorage Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC), which offer connections to larger hubs at the moment.
The passengers are under the number of the flights.
Because of the size and isolated area, Metro Field handles far fewer passengers and flights than most airports in the state. The airport saw under 50,000 passengers through its doors in the whole of last year and just over 12,000 movements. Although these figures may be small by comparison, they highlight the fact that this airport is about connecting to the community and bush.
How to Get Here
Metro Field is easily accessible — the airport calls Fairbanks home. The Parks Highway (AK-3) will take travelers to the airport through signage. The airport is located about 15 miles southwest of downtown Fairbanks, providing convenient access to both residents and travelers passing through.
Parking
There's a small, outdoor lot for private vehicles at Metro Field. The best part, aside from the FREE usage, is that there are spaces for overnight and long-term parking. The airport suggests using the long-term parking areas for anyone who needs to leave a vehicle sitting at the airport for an extended period.
Transportation Price
To and from Metro Field is actually fairly cheap, with many forms of transportation serving the airport. The most convenient choices are a taxi or rideshare service, with fare generally running $20 to $30 one-way from downtown Fairbanks. For budget travelers, the local Rapid Transit System includes bus service to/from the airport for a few dollars per ride.
Terminal Layout
Metro Field itself is a small regional airport, and therefore its terminal design reflects this too. The terminal building is single-story, which includes the main check-in area and security checkpoint among sparse amenities like a small waiting section and limited concessions. While small in scale, the terminal is designed to accommodate travelers with comfort and efficiency.
Navigate the Airport
Metro Field is small and very simple to browse. Once here, finding the check-in counters, security checkpoint, and departure gates is really simple for travelers. The terminal is well-signed, making it easy enough to navigate for first-timers as well as experienced visitors.
Getting Between Terminals
Metro Field is a non-hub airport, so there are no issues with connecting from one plane to another. Passengers can access all services and facilities for arrivals and departures within the same compact building.
Services and Amenities
Although it may be limited in scope, Mountaincrest still offers public services as well as amenities to meet the passengers' needs. They feature restrooms, a small concession stand, and some basic passenger seating. Free Wi-Fi is available at the airport as well, helping travelers to stay in touch while on site.
Restaurants and Shops
Metro Field does offer some dining and shopping choices, although the commercial side of things is limited due to its relatively small size and remote location. No matter – the on-site concession stand offers a rudimentary menu of snacks, drinks, and dishes that will serve as quick fill-me-ups or provisions for hungry travelers in dire times.
Security and Customs
As a domestic airport, Metro Field does not have customs facilities. The only security checkpoint at the airport is more like a procedure where all passengers and their luggage are screened before they can leave for departure gates. These security procedures are brief and simple for minimal traveler inconvenience.
Accessibility
Metro Field will provide subject-to-change facilities and services. The terminal building and parking lot(s) are accessible per ADA with handicap-designated parking, ramps, and restrooms. In addition to this, the airport staff is trained in assisting passengers with special needs, making a comfortable and inclusive travel experience for all.
Travel Tips
Key Tips to Organizing your trip through Metro Field
- During times when the airport is less busy, you should be booking your flight.
- Tip: The airport is really tiny, so it's a good idea to show up about an hour before the departure here (or else you're going nowhere).
- Travel with carry-on only: Metro Field has minimal terminal amenities and very limited space, so it is always in your interest to travel light (literally).
- Know the layout of Qatar's only hub: Study Hamad International Airport terminal map and know where check-in counters, security checkpoint is located to efficiently move around the airport.
