Hana Airport

Welcome to Hana Airport. Out in the middle of Maui, on Mahalo Island. It is only three nautical miles away from the town of Hana. It was officially established on November 11, 1950 as Hana Airport. Primarily acting as an aerial taxi and general aviation commuter site. More flights have been arriving at the airport over a number of years. Such pursuance will therefore lead the state to enhance its facilities. New air taxiway, larger approach roads and passenger terminals could also be eventually added to the upgrade. Even though Pacific Wings used to offer commercial flights, the high price of fares meant that few passengers wanted to fly. Today, Hana Airport is still a major player for people staying on the idylic island of Maui.

Introduction

Hana Airport (IATA: HNM) is a regional public use airport of the State of Hawaii and provides important transportation services to local residents, visitors, mail carriers, and suppliers in East Maui on the Island of Maui. The airport officially opened on November 11, 1950, and has grown from a small grass airstrip to supporting Hana with superior facilities and amenities for both scheduled and unscheduled air traffic.

Airlines and Destinations

The only flight out of Hana Airport is a non-stop route to Kahului (OGG), approximately 17 miles away. A small percentage of the airport is used by commuter airlines, and no commercial airline has scheduled flights with Hana (HNM) as a destination.

Passengers and Flights

Hana Airport also serves a very low volume of passengers compared to the larger main airports in Hawaii, as there are not many short-term flights departing from HNM. The airport had 375 passengers for the first ten months of 2012, and Mokulele Airlines reported carrying 1,706 passengers since October.

How to Get Here

There are two ways to get to Hana Airport. A favorite with visitors is the 52-mile Hana Highway, more commonly referred to as The Road to Hana. But, first-timers will find the winding road quite challenging. Alternatively, travelers have the option of flying directly to Hana Airport with flights from nearby airports, including Kahului Airport (OGG).

Hana Airport offers a fairly basic range of parking options and prices, with its facilities well-suited for the needs of regular local residents or infrequent travelers.

Transportation Prices

Depending on your mode of travel, transportation costs to and from Hana Airport will vary. Instead, travelers simply driving the Road to Hana (rental car and gas) may find the round-trip tickets, which were running around $110, to be more expensive.
