Airnorth History

Airnorth was founded in 1978 and commenced its charter operations in July of the same year. Three years after, it starts offering scheduled services. At the beginning of its operations, it makes use of Beechcraft Super King Air and Douglas DC-3. Later on, it added both the Fairchild Metro 23 and Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia turboprop aircraft to their fleet.

In the year 1999, Airnorth’s charter service from Darwin to Dili in East Timor begun. A year after, it became a scheduled service and this marks the first international route of Airnorth. In the year 2003, it purchased the assets of the Airlines of South Australia and was finalized. A year after, it also acquired the EMU Airways. Unfortunately, in the year 2005, Airnorth sold off both the ASA and Emu Airways. However, in the same year, in November, the two acquired airline companies ceased its operations.

Two years after, Airnorth has acquired the Embraer ERJ-170 and starts commencing its direct flight between Darwin and Townsville in the year 2012. With this, Airnorth has become the first Australian airline company to provide non-stop connection between the said cities. In the year 2015, a division of the US-based Bristow Group has acquired almost 85 percent controlling assets of Airnorth, although the airline’s identity and branding should retain.

Airnorth may undergo some financial instability but recently, its progress was greatly seen. Now, Airnorth shares an alliance with Qantas Airways. Under this partnership, it includes the hosting of flights with the use of the Amadeus global distribution system, the Qantas frequent flyer program, e-ticketing, baggage checks, and even marketing efforts.

In the year 2008, it marks the Airnorth’s 40th anniversary. In line with this, the airline company has launched a new inflight magazine entitled “Together, We Fly”. Besides, this airline company also provides services and support to some communities by sponsoring charities, events, and other deserving causes.
