Hainan Airlines was originally founded in October 1989 with its headquarters located in Haikou, Hainan, China. It became the first joint-stock air-transport enterprise of China in 1993 and started its commercial flight services in May 1993. The provincial airline then changed its name to Hainan Airlines.

Hainan Airlines has main hubs at Haikou Meilan International Airport with secondary hubs at Beijing Capital International Airport and Xi’an Xianyang International Airport.
