Sichuan Airlines was founded on September 19, 1986, as Sichuan Airlines Company with its headquarters located in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. It is a regional airline that started flying on July 14, 1988, between Chengdu and Wanzhou and mainly operates in the West of China. It is privately owned by Sichuan Airlines Co., Ltd. Group with shareholders, China Southern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Shandong Airlines, and Chengdu Gingko Catering Co, Ltd. It changed its name to Sichuan Airlines in 2002.

The airline is operating in its main hubs at Chengdu Shuangliu Airport and its secondary hubs at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport and Kunming Changshui International Airport.

Sichuan Airlines has a fleet size of 153 aircraft that are all Airbus type that includes Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Airbus A321, Airbus A330, and Airbus A350. It has an average fleet age of 5.7 years. The carrier operates the largest fleet of Airbus fleet in China, and by 2020, it strives to have more than 180 aircraft in its fleet.

The airline’s most recent accident happened on May 14, 2018, when Sichuan Airlines Flight 8633 from Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport was diverted to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport after the windshield on the co-pilot’s side blew off. The crew had a difficult landing with the co-pilot and a flight attendant reportedly injured.
