Skytrans Flight Status
Skytrans Airlines History
Skytrans Airlines is a carrier that is based in Cairns. It was established in the year 1990 by David and Sue Bernard. It starts offering charter services and later on, in the year 1993, it commenced its scheduled flights. This airline company was able to acquire the services to Cooktown and Kurumba from MacAir Airlines in the year 2001. Four years after, it enters a competition with QantasLink as it begins to operate flights on the Cairns to Townsville route. It operates both from its terminals in the said cities.
In the year 2016, Skytrans was acquired from David and Sue Bernard by the Australian Aviation Holdings. It also owns the Queensland Regional Airline and even the Inland Pacific Air. However, the Queensland Regional Airline and Skytrans eventually merged under the Skytrans banner. In the latter part of 2014, to reduce operating costs, it cuts its workforce of over 200 employees by over half. It also trimmed its fleet of seven Dash 8-100 and even the three Dash 8-300.
Skytrans has been placed in voluntary administration and suspended its operations in the year 2015. According to its Managing Director Simon Wild, the company has reached such an unexpected scenario due to the worsening Australian dollar currency exchange rate plus the tough operating environment. The situation becomes much worst due to the loss of three Queensland regulated regional air routes in the latter part of 2014. The end of the company’s operations marked its 25th anniversary in serving Queensland.
In the year 2015, this carrier was able to return to the skies. It is now under the ownership of Collings Holdings Airlines. Peter Collings is the owner of the said company together with the West Wing Aviation, and Rugby League player Johnathan Thurston.
