Sunstate Airlines History

The company’s root is associated with the birth of Noosa Air which begins its operation in December 1975. Its inaugural flight which is from Noosa to Brisbane makes use of Britten-Norman Islander. The owner, Bevan Whitaker, set up another airline company which is now known as Sunstate Airlines. Its first flight commenced in December 1981 which serves intrastate routes in Queensland. It makes use of Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante. In the latter part of 1983, the two airline companies had completely merged. Three years after, Sunstate Airlines was able to purchase some shares in Victorian Airline and Murray Valley Airlines.

In the year 1990, the ownership of Sunstate Airlines was given to Australian Airlines. The airline operations were then rebranded as Southern Australia Airlines which commenced its first operations in the year 1992. A year after, Sunstate Airlines was able to absorb the fleets and routes of Australian Regional Airlines. During this time, this airline company has three Dash-8, four Short-360, and five Twin Otters. However, in the same year, both Southern Australia and Sunstate modify their airline codes which are now QF or Qantas.

Up to date, the said airline companies together with Eastern Australia Airlines, Impulse Airlines, and National Jet Systems’ Airlink operation were rebranded as QantasLink since it is a subsidiary of Qantas.  Although Southern Australia’s name slowly disappears when it was acquired by the Eastern Australia Airlines. In the year 2001, Sunstate received its six Q300 making an all-Dash 8 fleet. Five years after, the airline company was able to purchase seven Bombardier Dash 8 Q400. One has been used to its services to Queensland routes and remaining aircrafts were used to commence its new flight to Sydney and Canberra. Due to its fleet and routes expansion, the smaller variants of the Dash 8 have been gradually withdrawn from service.

If you’re in Cairns, it serves the following destinations: Hamilton Island, Horn Island, Mackay, Moranbah, Rockhampton, Townsville, and Weipa. If by chance you are at Townsville, it has flights going to Cloncurry, Mount Isa, Mackay, Rockhampton, and Brisbane. It also offers flights from Melbourne to Devonport, Launceston, and Midura. If flying from Sydney, it serves the towns of Canberra and Toowomba.
