Sunwing Airlines History

Sunwing Airlines Inc. is one of Canada’s low-cost carrier headquartered in the Etobicoke district of Toronto, Ontario. This Canadian airline company does not only provide scheduled and charter services from Canada and the United States but also to destinations within Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. As the summer month starts approaching, Sunwing can offer domestic services across Canada and even to some European cities. To give you an idea, Sunwing is a subsidiary of the well-known Sunwing Travel Group. In addition to those services that were previously mentioned, it also operates a seasonal flight from more than 30 local Canadian gateways.

In the year 2004, Sunwing Vacations became the second-largest tour operator in the entire area of Ontario. But a year before that milestone was achieved, one of its former Sky service employees which is Mark Williams initiated to approached the owner and CEO of Sunwing Travel Group named Colin Hunter. The employee asked Hunter if he wanted to start an airline. With a series of planning and thinking about such a big endeavor, a few weeks later, a concrete plan was created to launch the airline. The airline’s inaugural flight takes place on November 2005 using its Boeing 737-800 departing from Toronto. A month later, Sunwing was able to provide a direct flight commencing from Sudbury, Ontario to Varadero, Cuba. It is the first international flight that starts directly from Sudbury Airport.

In November 2006, the company started to offer flights out of Montreal. In 2008, with its expansion plan, it was able to operate in 29 cities. Years had passed and this airline company continues to offer exceptional services to its target market. And in the year 2015, Sunwing was able to acquire two Boeing 737-800 and four Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from Air Lease Corporation for a finalized deal of $350 million. A year later in 2016, Sunwing entered a partnership with Seneca College and University of Waterloo to form a cadet program. The agenda includes flight training and mentorship under Sunwing. In January 2017, Sunwing also joined the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) expedited screening program and TSA Pre-check. During that time, the said program is only available at 180 airports in the United States and works only with 30 airlines.

Sunwing Airlines Destinations

Sunwing was able to provide flights to a wide range of popular vacation destinations like the Caribbean, Mexico, Cuba, and Central and South America. In its hometown, which is Canada, it operates flight to some pre-defined domestic routes like Toronto to Vancouver which starts during the summer of 2015. Other operations include Stephenville, Gander and St John’s from Toronto. On the same year, the airlines also commenced its service to Caribbean destinations for those passengers who are coming from Atlanta, Baltimore, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Columbus, Houston, Lansing, Milwaukee, Nashville, New Orleans, Newark, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Rockford.
