What do the colors mean?

  • No traffic seen The runway is there, but we see nothing on it right now.
  • Arriving traffic Aircraft are descending toward this runway right now.
  • Departing traffic Aircraft are climbing out from this runway right now.
  • Direction unknown It says “in use now” without an arrow: we see traffic, but the aircraft does not report whether it is climbing or descending.

The white arrow on the runway points the way the traffic is going. Derived from the positions of aircraft flying low near the airport right now. Not an official runway plan; what we see.

Designation, direction and length of every runway. These rarely change; which one is in use right now shows up here whenever we observe traffic.

Schiphol: the home of KLM and one of Europe's great transfer airports

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (IATA AMS, ICAO EHAM) lies in the Haarlemmermeer polder, a quarter of an hour by train southwest of Amsterdam and more than four meters below sea level. It is the largest airport in the Netherlands and the home hub of KLM, which makes it one of the great transfer airports of Europe: a large share of its passengers never leave the building, changing between a European and an intercontinental flight. For visitors to Amsterdam it is also one of the easiest airports in the world to get into town from. The live radar on this page shows what is moving around Schiphol right now; the arrivals and departures pages are linked above it.

Airlines and destinations

KLM is by far the largest airline at Schiphol and, with its regional arm KLM Cityhopper, flies to almost every sizeable city in Europe and to North America, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean; Delta is its transatlantic partner. Transavia is the group's leisure airline for the Mediterranean, easyJet the biggest low-cost carrier here, and TUI fly and Corendon fly the package-holiday routes. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines are among the long-haul names. In our route data, London Heathrow, Dublin, Barcelona, Paris and Madrid are the most frequently flown connections, and Atlanta, New York JFK, Toronto and Dubai the busiest intercontinental ones.

Getting to and from Schiphol

The railway station is directly under the terminal, beneath Schiphol Plaza. Trains run day and night to Amsterdam Centraal in about fifteen minutes and directly to Utrecht, Rotterdam, The Hague, Leiden and Eindhoven; the Eurostar to Brussels and Paris stops here too. Bus 397 runs to the city center and other lines serve Haarlem and Amstelveen. By car, the A4 and A9 lead to the airport; short-term parking is in the garages at the terminal, while the long-term lots with a shuttle bus are far cheaper, especially booked online. Taxis wait outside Schiphol Plaza at the official rank.

Good to know

Schiphol has one terminal with three departure halls (1, 2 and 3) and piers B to H plus M. Halls 1 and 2 mostly serve flights within the Schengen area, hall 3 and piers E, F and G the intercontinental flights. The piers form a horseshoe around the terminal, so the walk from security to a far gate can take a quarter of an hour; a transfer from a European to a long-haul flight includes passport control, and ninety minutes is comfortable. In summer and around Christmas, arrive well ahead of time. The nearby alternatives are Eindhoven for low-cost flights and Rotterdam The Hague with Transavia. Every airport we track is listed in the airport overview.
