What do the colors mean?
The white arrow on the runway points the way the traffic is going. Derived from the positions of aircraft flying low near the airport right now. Not an official runway plan; what we see.
Designation, direction and length of every runway. These rarely change; which one is in use right now shows up here whenever we observe traffic.

Practical
Transport by train, metro, bus, and taxi; parking at the airport; picking someone up or dropping them off.
Fly direct
The destinations we know the most flight numbers for. That approximates how heavily a route is served; it is not a passenger count.
Other airports within reach, with the straight-line distance and the number of direct destinations we know of. Airports without scheduled service are left out.

LHR Airport, formally London Heathrow Airport (IATA LHR, ICAO EGLL), serves London in the United Kingdom and sits at the very top of our own 30-day measurement: it is the busiest airport in our data. Our database places it at 51.4707 degrees north, 0.4599 degrees west, and lists it in the large airport size class. The live radar on this page shows the aircraft arriving at and departing from LHR right now, with the arrivals and departures pages linked above it for flight times and status; the sections below add what our own numbers say about the airport: which airline pages to check for a specific flight, how the traffic we measured spreads over the day, and which other London airports have their own pages on this site.
The gap between British Airways and the rest of the field is what stands out in our Heathrow data. In our own 30-day measurement, British Airways accounted for 1,163 observations near Heathrow, compared with 87 for United Airlines and 70 for American Airlines over the same 30 days, so British Airways appeared far more often than its closest measured rival. Of the carriers we measured at Heathrow, British Airways was by far the largest; those three are the only carriers in our data for LHR. If you are following one specific flight rather than the airport as a whole, the airline page is the faster route: British Airways flight status for the carrier that dominates our Heathrow count, and United Airlines flight status and American Airlines flight status for the two carriers we recorded at 87 and 70 observations.
Over 30 days, our own reception measurement recorded an average of 109.4 aircraft observations per day near Heathrow, the figure that puts LHR at the top of our measurement. The busiest window in that period fell between 06:00 and 08:00. Our measurement clock runs in UTC, so add the offset for London local time when you read it alongside the radar on this page. That early-morning stretch is when we recorded the most aircraft near Heathrow.
For travelers weighing an alternative for their trip, two options with their own pages on this site are London City Airport at 36 km and London Gatwick Airport at 41 km; both distances come from our database and are measured from Heathrow. Heathrow itself is one of the United Kingdom airports we cover; for a journey that touches more than one of them, the airport overview is the place to start.
