Airline History

Air India, the flag carrier airline of India was founded in 1932 as Tata Air Services by JRD Tata, who was also the pilot of their first plane. He flew from Karachi to Bombay and Madras after receiving the contract to carry air mail. During 1938 they started carrying passengers and renamed the company to Tata Airlines. After World War II it became a limited public company and was renamed to Air India during 1946, during 1948 the Indian Government acquired a 49% share of Air India. Their first international flight was from Bombay to London’s Heathrow Airport on 8 June 1948. During the 1950’s the Indian Government became the majority shareholder and it is today fully owned by the government.
The airline hub is at the Indira Gandhi Airport, New Delhi and operates both domestic and international flights. They also operate from cities spread across India. Airline Fleet

Air India has a fleet of more than 118 aircraft, excluding those owned by its subsidiaries. The fleet consists of the Airbus 320 range and several Boeing 747-400, 777-200, 777-300 and 787-8 aircraft. Their livery is white and red and they use the emperor or Maharajah as a mascot, their logo is a swan with a wheel inside.
