Swoop History
Swoop is categorized as an ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) in Canada owned by WestJet which was officially inaugurated on September 27, 2017. A year after, on June 20, 2018, it commenced its flight. The company was named “swoop” due to WestJet’s desire to jump into a Canadian market with the use of this new business venture. This airline is based in the nearby market like Edmonton, Abbotsford, Hamilton or Winnipeg. In the year 2018, February 1, to be exact, Swoop officially began selling tickets to the public. Its main hub is located at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport while its western hub is at Edmonton International Airport.
In April 2017, WestJet already has the plan of launching its new airline to enter the game of the growing ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) market that will also compete against New Leaf that is now rebranded as Flair Airlines. It was supposedly inaugurated in August 2017 but was postponed due to switching to another low-cost booking system. Since its announcement to the public, it was expected to offer base fares that are 40% lower than WestJet’s fares. Also, this airline will be launching its six Boeing 737-800 aircraft in the same year.
On June 2018, this airline company launched two of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft with its inaugural flight commencing from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport going to Abbotsford International Airport. As per the news, passengers only paid an average of $103 for their flight.
On August 2018, it was officially announced that Swoop will be the first ULCC to fly to the United States such as in Las Vegas, Phoenix (Mesa), Tampa, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale that will start in October of the same year. However, before launching its services to the said destinations, another four more destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean was announced to launch on December 2018 and January 2019, respectively. Due to lack of US approval, the launched of flights to America was delayed.
Swoop Fleet
Swoop’s fleet is mainly composed of Boeing 737 Next-Generation aircraft. To be specific, it makes use of the Boeing 737-800. In 2018, six fleets are in operation and 2019, notably by spring season, it will launch another aircraft. In total, Swoop acquired 7 aircraft that will be in service to the said destinations.
