Aden Adde: Somalia's main airport

Aden Adde International Airport (IATA MGQ, ICAO HCMM) lies on the Indian Ocean shore in the southwest of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, with its runway running along the beach. It is the country's principal airport and, after years of isolation, has regained scheduled flights to the Gulf, Turkey and East Africa, carrying the Somali diaspora home, aid workers and business travelers. The airport sits inside the heavily protected zone around the international compound and the seat of government. The radar on this page shows what our data sources report around Mogadishu; the arrivals and departures pages are linked above it. Somalia is two hours ahead of Central Europe in winter and one in summer.

Airlines and destinations

Turkish Airlines has flown to Mogadishu from Istanbul since 2012 and is the airport's best-known international carrier; Ethiopian Airlines connects Addis Ababa, Qatar Airways Doha, flydubai Dubai, Kenya Airways Nairobi and Air Djibouti the short hop to Djibouti. Somali and regional carriers such as Daallo Airlines and Jubba Airways fly to Hargeisa, Nairobi, Djibouti and Jeddah. The schedules change often and the airport lies far outside the reach of our receivers, so the live radar depends on other data sources and may show little.

Getting into the city

Independent travel from the airport is not realistic for most visitors: organizations and hotels arrange armored or escorted transport from the airport compound into the city, and the hotels used by foreigners are mostly inside or near the secured zone. Taxis exist but are not recommended for newcomers. Allow for several layers of checks on the way in and out of the airport perimeter.

Good to know

The terminal is a single modern building opened in the 2010s, with departures and arrivals on separate floors and a limited number of gates; expect thorough security screening and long waits at immigration when the Gulf flights arrive together. A visa is required and is usually obtained on arrival or through an inviting organization; check the current requirements. Most governments advise against travel to Somalia, so read your own government's travel advice before booking. Hargeisa serves Somaliland in the north, and Nairobi is the usual regional connection.
