What do the colors mean?
The white arrow on the runway points the way the traffic is going. Derived from the positions of aircraft flying low near the airport right now. Not an official runway plan; what we see.
Designation, direction and length of every runway. These rarely change; which one is in use right now shows up here whenever we observe traffic.
2 runways · Longest runway: 13,471 ft
We currently see no traffic on approach or just after takeoff. That happens at a quiet airport or in the middle of the night.

Practical
Transport by bus and taxi; parking at the airport; picking someone up or dropping them off.
Fly direct
The destinations we know the most flight numbers for. That approximates how heavily a route is served; it is not a passenger count.
Other airports within reach, with the straight-line distance and the number of direct destinations we know of. Airports without scheduled service are left out.

Zayed International Airport (IATA AUH, ICAO OMAA), called Abu Dhabi International until 2024, lies about 30 kilometers east of the center of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. It is the home hub of Etihad Airways and the third of the great Gulf transfer airports after Dubai and Doha, with connections to India, Southeast Asia, Australia and Africa, and since late 2023 it operates from a single vast new terminal shaped like a dune. For visitors, Abu Dhabi offers the Louvre, the Grand Mosque and Yas Island, and Dubai is an hour and a half down the highway. The live radar on this page shows the traffic around Abu Dhabi; the arrivals and departures pages are linked above it.
Etihad Airways dominates the airport and flies to London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Zurich, Madrid, Rome, Milan and across Europe, to New York, Washington, Chicago, Toronto, Sydney, Melbourne, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and dozens of cities in India and the Middle East. The Indian traffic is enormous, with Air India Express, IndiGo, Akasa Air and Air India; Air Arabia Abu Dhabi is the emirate's low-cost airline. British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and Oman Air are among the other carriers. In our route data, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad and Tel Aviv are the most frequently flown connections, and London Heathrow, Zurich, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt the busiest European ones.
Taxis wait outside the terminal, run on the meter and are cheap by European standards; the ride to the city center takes about half an hour, to the Yas Island hotels twenty minutes. Bus A1 runs around the clock to the center but takes well over an hour. Etihad and intercity buses connect Dubai; by taxi the drive is about an hour and a half. Rental cars are available in the arrivals hall, and the Emirates are a driving country with wide, fast highways. Abu Dhabi has no metro.
Since late 2023 all traffic uses Terminal A, a single huge building with every airline under one roof; the old terminals are closed. Walks to the gates can be long but the signage is good, and ninety minutes is a comfortable connection with Etihad. Visitors from most of Europe and North America receive a visa on arrival; check the current rules. The time difference with Central Europe is two hours in summer and three in winter, and summer temperatures pass 45 degrees. The alternative in the Gulf is Dubai with Emirates, served from far more cities. Every airport we track is listed in the airport overview.
