Schiphol departures: how to read the board

The departures board above lists the flights leaving Amsterdam Airport Schiphol today, with the scheduled departure time, the estimated or actual time, the destination and the status. The data comes straight from Schiphol and updates continuously; an estimated time later than the schedule means a delay, and departed means the aircraft has left the gate.

Schiphol has one terminal with three departure halls: Halls 1 and 2 for most flights within the Schengen area, Hall 3 for intercontinental flights and most flights to Britain; your boarding pass and the board tell you which. Beyond security the piers fan out around the terminal, and the walk to a far gate can take fifteen minutes. Arrive well ahead of time, especially in summer and around Christmas, when Schiphol itself advises a larger margin.

Dropping off and getting there

For a quick drop-off, use the Kiss & Ride in front of the departure halls: a very short stop to let someone out and unload luggage, free and without a reservation; waiting is not allowed. To see someone off inside, park at P1 Pick-up and Drop-off. From the station below the terminal an escalator takes you straight onto Schiphol Plaza; trains run around the clock from Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague, and the Eurostar from London stops at Schiphol too.

The board is dominated by KLM and KLM Cityhopper flights to Europe and the long-haul network, with London Heathrow, Dublin and Barcelona the busiest connections, holiday flights with Transavia and TUI fly, easyJet to Britain and southern Europe, and long-haul departures with Delta to Atlanta and New York JFK and Emirates to Dubai.
