What do the colors mean?
The white arrow on the runway points the way the traffic is going. Derived from the positions of aircraft flying low near the airport right now. Not an official runway plan; what we see.
Designation, direction and length of every runway. These rarely change; which one is in use right now shows up here whenever we observe traffic.

Practical
Transport by train, metro, and taxi; parking at the airport; picking someone up or dropping them off.
Fly direct
The destinations we know the most flight numbers for. That approximates how heavily a route is served; it is not a passenger count.
Other airports within reach, with the straight-line distance and the number of direct destinations we know of. Airports without scheduled service are left out.

In our own traffic measurement, JFK Airport, formally John F. Kennedy International Airport (IATA: JFK, ICAO: KJFK), ranks among the very busiest airports we track. Serving New York, United States, it is one of the large airports in our measurement, and the live radar on this page reflects that: it shows the aircraft arriving at and departing from JFK right now, while the arrivals and departures pages linked above the radar show the status of any flight the moment it changes.
We run a continuous reception measurement of air traffic, and JFK sits in the top tier of it. Over the past 30 days, our receivers logged an average of 197.5 aircraft observations per day near the airport, which places it among the busiest in our entire measurement. Because that figure is a 30-day average, one unusually quiet or busy day barely moves it: it describes the normal level of traffic our receivers pick up at JFK.
One detail from that same 30-day period: the busiest window we recorded, the two hours with the most logged observations, falls between 01:00 and 03:00. Note that our measurement clock runs in UTC, so this reflects our logging time, not the local New York clock.
Three carriers dominate our JFK data. JetBlue leads by a wide margin, with 2,909 observations logged in the past 30 days; if you are flying with them, check the JetBlue flight status page for the current state of their flights. Delta Air Lines comes second with 1,105 observations in the same period, and the Delta flight status page is the place to look up a specific Delta departure or arrival. American Airlines rounds out the top three with 752 observations; the American Airlines flight status page covers their operation.
These figures come from our reception measurement over the same 30 days.
The closest airport to JFK in our data is LaGuardia Airport, 17 km away. Two more fields sit at the same 33 km: Teterboro Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. If none of these fits your route, our airport overview is the starting point for every other American airport on this site.
In our records JFK is classified as a large airport and is listed at coordinates 40.6394, -73.7793. Together with LaGuardia at 17 km and Teterboro and Newark at 33 km each, that puts four airports in our data within a radius of 33 km, and the radar on this page shows which aircraft are arriving at or departing from JFK right now.
