What do the colors mean?
The white arrow on the runway points the way the traffic is going. Derived from the positions of aircraft flying low near the airport right now. Not an official runway plan; what we see.
Designation, direction and length of every runway. These rarely change; which one is in use right now shows up here whenever we observe traffic.

Practical
Transport by taxi; parking at the airport; picking someone up or dropping them off.
Fly direct
The destinations we know the most flight numbers for. That approximates how heavily a route is served; it is not a passenger count.
Other airports within reach, with the straight-line distance and the number of direct destinations we know of. Airports without scheduled service are left out.

CLT Airport, formally Charlotte Douglas International Airport, serves Charlotte in the United States and carries the codes CLT (IATA) and KCLT (ICAO). In our data it is a large airport with a busy traffic level, and our database places it at 35.214 degrees north, 80.9431 degrees west. The live radar on this page shows the aircraft arriving at and departing from CLT right now; the sections below add what our own 30-day measurement recorded at Charlotte, which airlines we measured there, and which nearby airports have their own pages on this site.
Over a 30-day period, our own reception measurement recorded an average of 27.9 aircraft observations per day near the Charlotte airport. Next to that figure stands the label our database gives the airport, busy, and the two are separate facts: the label is the traffic level in our data, the 27.9 is what our reception measurement recorded.
One detail stands out in that data: the busiest window at CLT fell between 00:00 and 02:00. Note that our measurement clock runs in UTC, not local Charlotte time, so this window reflects the airport's rhythm as recorded in our measurement rather than what a wall clock at the terminal would show. If you are picking someone up or catching a late flight, the arrivals and departures pages linked above the radar remain the place to confirm the actual timing of your flight.
Two carriers appeared in our 30-day measurement at Charlotte Douglas, and the balance between them is anything but even. American Airlines dominated the picture with 430 observations, making it by far the most frequently measured airline at CLT in our data. If you are flying with them, see the American Airlines flight status page.
Delta Air Lines also showed up in our measurement, though on a much smaller scale, with 17 observations over the same 30 days. Travelers on that carrier can go to the Delta flight status page. American and Delta are the only two carriers in our package for Charlotte.
Charlotte Douglas is not the only option in the region; our database lists three alternatives. The closest is Concord-Padgett Regional Airport, just 29 km away. Farther out, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport lies 121 km from CLT, and Piedmont Triad International Airport at 134 km completes the list. The distances come from our database and are measured from Charlotte Douglas. Concord-Padgett, the nearest of the three, is the first alternative to look at when a flight at CLT falls through.
