What do the colors mean?
The white arrow on the runway points the way the traffic is going. Derived from the positions of aircraft flying low near the airport right now. Not an official runway plan; what we see.
Designation, direction and length of every runway. These rarely change; which one is in use right now shows up here whenever we observe traffic.

Practical
Transport by train, metro, and bus; parking at the airport; picking someone up or dropping them off.
Fly direct
The destinations we know the most flight numbers for. That approximates how heavily a route is served; it is not a passenger count.
Other airports within reach, with the straight-line distance and the number of direct destinations we know of. Airports without scheduled service are left out.

ORD Airport, formally Chicago O'Hare International Airport, serves Chicago in the United States and carries the codes ORD (IATA) and KORD (ICAO). It is a busy, large airport in our data, and our database places it at 41.9786 degrees north, 87.9048 degrees west. The live radar on this page shows the aircraft arriving at and departing from O'Hare right now, and the arrivals and departures pages linked above the radar are the fastest way to check the current flight status; the sections below add context the radar does not show, drawn from our own measurement and from the airport pages in our database.
Our own reception measurement recorded an average of 96.4 aircraft observations per day near ORD over 30 days, a figure that fits its standing as a busy airport in our data. It is our own measurement, offered as background to the live radar.
The busiest window in the same 30-day period fell between 00:00 and 02:00. Our measurement clock runs in UTC, so this window does not line up with Chicago wall-clock time and needs converting before you plan around it. If you are meeting a flight or tracking a delay, the arrivals and departures pages linked above the radar remain the place to look; the measurement tells you when traffic at O'Hare peaks in our data.
Two carriers stood out in our 30-day measurement at ORD. United Airlines was the most frequently recorded of the airlines we measured, with 657 observations; American Airlines followed with 504 in the same period. The two counts are of the same order, with United ahead but American not far behind, and they are the only two carriers in our data for O'Hare. The airline pages for both carriers are United Airlines flight status and American Airlines flight status.

O'Hare is not the only airport in the Chicago area; our database lists three alternatives within 101 km. The closest is Chicago Midway International Airport, 25 km from O'Hare. Gary/Chicago International Airport follows at 57 km, and Chicago Rockford International Airport is the farthest of the three at 101 km. All three distances come from our database and are measured from O'Hare. Midway, the nearest of the three, is the first alternative to look at when a flight at O'Hare falls through; Gary and Rockford are the options farther out.
For O'Hare itself, the radar on this page stays the primary source for what is in the air: it shows the aircraft arriving at and departing from ORD as they come in, with our 30-day measurement as the background picture of how busy the airport runs in our data.
