What do the colors mean?
The white arrow on the runway points the way the traffic is going. Derived from the positions of aircraft flying low near the airport right now. Not an official runway plan; what we see.
Designation, direction and length of every runway. These rarely change; which one is in use right now shows up here whenever we observe traffic.

Practical
Transport by train, bus, and taxi; parking at the airport; picking someone up or dropping them off.
Fly direct
The destinations we know the most flight numbers for. That approximates how heavily a route is served; it is not a passenger count.
Other airports within reach, with the straight-line distance and the number of direct destinations we know of. Airports without scheduled service are left out.

The live radar on this page follows the aircraft arriving at and departing from SFO Airport, San Francisco International Airport (IATA: SFO, ICAO: KSFO), as our receivers pick them up. SFO serves San Francisco in the United States and sits at the top of our own traffic measurement. One airline shapes that traffic more than any other: United Airlines appears in our SFO data more often than American Airlines and Southwest Airlines combined. The sections below add that measured background to the radar and to the arrivals and departures pages linked above it, using only what our own network recorded.
The figures on this page come from our own 30-day reception measurement at San Francisco airport. Over those 30 days, the count averaged 170.5 aircraft observations per day, and that daily volume is what puts SFO at the top of our measurement. In our records SFO is also classified as a large airport, and it is listed at coordinates 37.6198, -122.3748.
The measurement also shows when SFO peaks. The busiest two-hour window in our data falls between 00:00 and 02:00. Our measurement clock runs in UTC, so this window does not refer to local time in San Francisco; it simply marks the time of day our receivers register the most traffic at SFO within a 24-hour cycle. To read that window in San Francisco time, apply the local offset from UTC; we leave the measurement clock unconverted on this page.
United Airlines leads our SFO count by a wide margin, with 1,357 observations in 30 days. If you are following a specific United flight to or from San Francisco, the United Airlines flight status page is the place to check. American Airlines follows with 420 observations over the same period, and Southwest Airlines logged 309; both carriers are covered on their own pages as well, at American Airlines flight status and Southwest flight status.
SFO is not the only airport near San Francisco in our database. The closest is San Carlos Airport, 16 km from SFO. Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport lies 18 km from SFO, and Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport is 49 km away. All three have their own pages on this site, so if your flight involves one of them instead, that is where to look. With three airports within 49 km in our data, the San Francisco area is one where a flight can easily be listed at a neighbor rather than at SFO itself, so it pays to check which field your airline uses.
For airports elsewhere in the country, our airport overview is the starting point.
