What do the colors mean?
The white arrow on the runway points the way the traffic is going. Derived from the positions of aircraft flying low near the airport right now. Not an official runway plan; what we see.
Designation, direction and length of every runway. These rarely change; which one is in use right now shows up here whenever we observe traffic.

Practical
Transport by metro, bus, and taxi; parking at the airport; picking someone up or dropping them off.
Fly direct
The destinations we know the most flight numbers for. That approximates how heavily a route is served; it is not a passenger count.
Other airports within reach, with the straight-line distance and the number of direct destinations we know of. Airports without scheduled service are left out.

Dulles Airport, officially Washington Dulles International Airport, is a large and busy international airport in Dulles, United States. Its airport codes are IAD (IATA) and KIAD (ICAO), and it sits at 38.9445 north, 77.4558 west. The live radar on this page shows the aircraft arriving at and departing from IAD right now, and the arrivals and departures pages linked above the radar carry the times and status of each flight. The sections below add something the radar cannot show: what our own reception measurement recorded at Dulles Airport over a full month.
IAD is the three-letter IATA code you will see on tickets and booking confirmations for Dulles; KIAD is the four-letter ICAO code used in aviation datasets, including ours. Both refer to the same airport, and our database lists it in the large airport size class.
The figures in this section come from our own 30-day reception measurement. Over those 30 days, we recorded an average of 59.1 aircraft observations per day near Washington Dulles, a level of activity that matches its classification as a busy airport in our data.
The busiest window in our measurement fell between 01:00 and 03:00. One important note for travelers reading that number: our measurement clock runs in UTC, not local time, so that peak window needs to be converted to the local clock before you plan around it. Both the daily average and the busiest window come from the same 30-day period, so they describe one and the same stretch of traffic at IAD. A concentration like that is exactly why a live radar is useful at an airport this size: activity at IAD is not spread evenly across the day in our measurement.
United Airlines appears in our data as well: we recorded 642 observations of United aircraft near IAD during the 30-day measurement, and it is the only carrier in our data for Dulles. If you are meeting a passenger or catching a connection on this carrier, the United Airlines flight status page is the next place to look after the Dulles arrivals and departures pages.
Dulles is not the only airport in its area, and when schedules get tight it helps to know the alternatives we track nearby. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is the closest option at 38 km from IAD. Joint Base Andrews follows at 53 km. Farther out, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport lies 73 km away. The distances come from our database and are measured from Dulles. We track all three, and each has its own page on this site, so you can look up the one that suits your plans before deciding where to fly from or where to pick someone up.
